If you know some PHP, you can modify the script to set a cookie which records the threads viewed info for the visitor and sets the link color accordingly.
However, if the user clears their browser cookies, it will reset this info as well. The only way around this would be to have user accounts and logins with settings stored on the server side, which would require quite a bit of modifications.
