Disk I/O and USB I/O...

Under Windows XP (SP2 Pro) my disk I/O is pretty fast, and my USB I/O is okay. Under Linux, any distribution lately (Ubuntu, Sabayon, whathaveyou) it's about 10x faster, even using NTFS (through Captive.) Copying 4.5 GB of House episodes under Windows took 4 minutes or so, whereas under Linux it took about 45 seconds. Same for USB -- Linux is about 10x faster.

I have all of the proper drivers installed under Windows -- for both my IDE controllers and my USB controllers (USB 2.0.) The drivers are from Intel, and they're designed for this motherboard, so there's no reason that their performance should be this bad.

I am really good at solving all kinds of computer problems, but now it seems that I've hit a good wall of problems I don't know how to solve.
