When I first started designing this site, I was trying to go for a "retro" theme. So I tried using green/black or orange/black colors, like an old monochrome monitor. However, orange/black are really hideous colors for a website. ;)
(Now that I think about it dark orange/brown/black might look ok...)
Anyway, green/black was kind of hard on the eyes as well. So then I tried blue/black, and I really liked it. When I first started, I only had one shade of blue (for the menu on the left/top), and then black for the main page.
It looked a little bare, so then I tried putting blue behind the section headings (similar to Nemesis QB, if you remember that site). Eventually this "evolved" into the boxes with the dark blue background.
As far as site layout/organization, my main influence was again Nemesis QB. The download/article list pages is very similar to the Nemesis QB downloads page. I added the OS icon, date updated, and added an additional page for each download with more info, rather than having the download directly from the list page as Nemesis QB did. This allows for a longer description and screenshots as well.
When I was originally designing the site, I did a lot planning on paper, to figure out what information I wanted to have online and where it should go. It's a always challenge to get the organization right, and I had to change things several times before I was satisfied.
Is this related to the new Code Post site? How's it coming?
