I'm not sure about Office XP, but Office 2003 has a local install cache, so you don't actually need the CD to add/remove components to Office. So you might try to install it without the CD and see if it works.

Once it's installed, you can add the equation button to the toolbar in Word by choosing customize, all commands, and then InsertEquation.
