I played around with the "PIF" shortcut files from previous versions of QBasic and one time I did get it to work by changing an invalid path.. but it messed up later on.

I suppose you should tell everyone on the internet that:

"Actually all versions of QB work on XP. The PIF error you had before is just from an existing shortcut with a different path. If you had deleted the PIF it would have worked as well. ;)"

Everyone is screwing with files in C:Windows\System32 trying to make their QBasic compatible with Windows XP...

It's only a PIF file. So many hours of frustration  = 1 PIF file.
